There is a sign on a barbed wire fence in the Paisley-Challis Wetlands of Williamstown commemorating the approximate location of Melbourne’s first infectious diseases hospital, built in 1884 during a smallpox outbreak. The quaint name has no medical significance. Cut Paw Paw was an early cadastral parish, the name being a corruption of the original Aboriginal name for the area Koort boork boork, which translates to “Clumps of many She-oaks”.
